View In:   ArcGIS JavaScript   ArcGIS Online Map Viewer   ArcGIS Earth

Service Description:

MDOT SHA provides a series of georeferenced historical maps and aerials for research and public use. The image is publicly available from the Library of Congress online catalogue (https://www.loc.gov/item/94681799/). The Martenet’s Map of Maryland was completed 1865 by Simon J. Martenet C.E., engraving by Schmidt & Trowe, and was commissioned by U.S. Congress. The complete original title of the document is “Martenet's map of Maryland : including the District of Columbia, a sketch of Delaware, and a portion of northern and eastern Virginia showing some of the most interesting localities of the late war”. Maryland Environmental Service GIS on behalf of SHA attained the files from their sources, georeferenced each file using ESRI ArcGIS Pro to modern imagery using landmarks or coordinate tic marks if provided, and quality controlled for accuracy. This map is matched to modern geography as closely as possible based on the limitations of the original document and available imagery.
