Service Description: MDOT SHA provides a series of georeferenced historical maps and aerials for research and public use. These images are publicly available from Johns Hopkins University Library website, maps and atlases section (http://jhir.library.jhu.edu/handle/1774.2/36062). The aerial images of Worchester County’s eastern shoreline were photographed between October 1952 and July 1964 by Aero Service Corp. & Maps, Inc. for the Maryland State Roads Commission, now the Maryland State Highway Administration. The original aerial photography prints were later transferred to the Maryland Geological Survey (MGS), imaged in 2011, and made publicly available online by Johns Hopkins University Libraries. The extent of these images is of Worchester County eastern shoreline from the Maryland-Delaware border to the north to the Maryland-Virginia border to the south, which includes Ocean City and Fenwick and Assateague Islands. Maryland Environmental Service GIS on behalf of SHA attained the files from their sources, georeferenced each file using ESRI ArcGIS Pro to modern imagery using landmarks or coordinate tic marks if provided, and quality controlled for accuracy. These aerial images are matched to modern geography as closely as possible based on the limitations of the original document and available imagery.
